This novel is outside of my usual reading preference (literary fiction) – it falls in the paranormal suspense genre. I have done a fair amount of reading on vampires and werewolves, with a particular affinity for vampires, so I was comfortable in the world Langley created. This was one of the strongest and most intriguing parts of the this book; I very much enjoyed the author’s take on the paranormal world. She treats her supernatural characters in a very creative way. There have been some real literary duds lately dealing with paranormal creatures – this is not one of them.Charity Langley is a very talented writer. Her command of language, and of the vernacular of her characters, is impressive, especially in a first novel. I’ve done reviews (or am in the process of reviews) for a number of independently published authors, and I have been generally incredibly impressed with the quality of work that they are publishing. I’m making ever more contacts with independent authors, and I’m looking forward to reading more of their work.
The story in this novel is creative, original, engaging, and well put together. It hits a rough spot every now and then, but recovers quickly, and on the whole is wonderful to read. The action is fast paced and fluid – and there is a lot of action! I am curious (in a good way) to see how the characters continue to grow throughout the series.
My final note is about the editing (typical for me, I know): the only major distraction from Langley’s very strong first offering were some errors in editing, including spelling, missing words, and punctuation. Some of the rough transitions in story could also have been helped with a good editor…so I would just note that consistency could be improved, and basic editing mistakes avoided.
If you can’t already tell – I enjoyed this novel very much, and I am anxiously awaiting the second book in the series!

I definitely will read more work by this author. The story was fast paced and well written, and I will definitely be re-reading it sometime soon. However, there were two things that stuck out for me - unnecessary rape scenes and far to much crying from the lead character. I'm good with both of those things if they further the story line. But in this case, the story would have moved along perfectly fine without the tears and rape.
I normally like a period romance piece or a contemporary romance...this was NEITHER--I LOVED it! First and foremost this was a thriller, and a shocking one at that. But it had elements of the paranormal along with a steamy romance--the author built an awesome chemistry between the 2 main characters. I absolutely cannot wait to read book 2!! I highly recommend this book for those who can take a love story that is more "salty" than "sweet!" READ this book!
One of the best books I've read this year!
People have pointed out editing and grammar issues, and they are there, but since this is a work by an indie author, I overlook things like that unless it takes away from the work as a whole, and in this case they do not. FYI indie authors are either small press or self-published and often don't have the $$$ for editors. (Currently, all I read are indie books. Most are from by indie authors for free on promo days, because I'm in a tight financial place. To thank them, I'm uploading reviews of every book I finish). If you aren't checking out indie novels you are majorly missing out on some truly unique stuff.
The pacing of this novel is EXCELLENT. There isn't a single moment where something interesting isn't happening. I like the authors fresh take on the paranormal genre. The characters aren't completely heroes or monsters, but have flaws like any other person would. And some new creatures are brought into the mix that, like one of the goodreads reviewers said, I hope the author expands on in the next book.
And my very favorite part of this book was that the female lead wasn't constantly weak and in distress. I am over stories where some weak woman has to be rescued by some white super-human warrior and ridden off into the sunset. They're a dime a dozen. The lead is a quick-witted badass who has managed to make it on her own, despite some regrettable stuff in her past. She isn't happy or perfect, but she's fun to ride along with during this book.
I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dark fantasy, or urban fantasy, but if you're a prude who has issues with violence, sex, sexual violence and profanity this book isn't for you.
I am not, by nature, a horror story reader. I picked this book up after many discussions on up-and-coming-authors and read it over a period of five hours in airplanes.
Charity has written this story as much as a mystery as a horror story. Each chapter and scene in this book allows her to add one more piece to the puzzle. By doing so, she feeds the reader a fantastic new world, one bite at a time making it even more real, and even more believable.
Each of her characters screams to have a much more full book done on them, even Leon, the manager at Wicked Intentions. Her details were intricate, and her comments on the night-club scene at the beginning were worth a smile.
The triangle of love between Gabriel and Lauren and Therone is interesting and both suitors have their strengths
This is a FANTASTIC first book, and a great example of world building. I look forward to the next installment in a series that will soon be considered a cult-classic everywhere.
