The Town House Norah Robinson Lofts 9780891902300 Books

I had looked high and low for this book for many, many years but could not remember the title of the book nor the name of the author. I read it in 1975 for an Independent Reading Class (an easy "A" and a requirement for graduation which I needed 3000 pages for and "A")....
I searched while we lived for 5 years in the UK in their many book stores (old and new) but without success... 30 years after I read the book we lived in the Cotswolds and I had remembered the referencing "Cotswold Sheep" (only once) in the book... this is how much of an impression this book made on me in High School....it holds a place near and dear in my heart...
I enjoyed the story very much and was excited to find it was part of a trilogy and I bought the other books....

I am seldom disappointed with a Norah Lofts novel. She will always transport you back to the time period depicted. If you have an affinity for historical fiction, Norah does not disappoint and this particular effort is exceptional.
Norah Lofts's historical novels such as The Town House are a pleasure to read and reread and have as an ebook to take anywhere. Be sure to get the rest of the trilogy. The House at Old Vine and The House at Sunset. All full of interesting stories and characters. Enjoy.
This beautifully crafted book was recommended to me by an avid reader with a long memory. After reading The Physician, which I had recommended, she said if you enjoyed that you'll also like the Suffolk Trilogy. She was right. It is a generational saga. If you are looking for sweet characters and happily ever after endings, this is not the book for you. While there are plenty of characters to identify with, the author writes about a time in history when life was very hard. Read it and take a step back in time.
Enjoyed this story a lot. Story progresses at a good pace with enough time and description to develop the characters but also keeps the storyline moving along so as to maintain interest. I did feel the end was too rapidly done and with disappointing detail. I actually had to reread it to make sure I didn't miss anything while blinking.
My mother introduced me to this book more than 40 years ago, and despite her age, "The Town House" is just as captivating as the first time I read it. If you like to learn history (I'm a history buff and the author stays true to actual events), and if you like to completely immerse yourself in a book, read "The Town House," and then run, as fast as you can, to your device and order "The House at Old Vice" and "The House at Sunset." Like me, you will read them over and over
I read all the books in this series at least 40 years ago. I've reread them time after time. Now that I can no longer read due to macular degeneration, I'm looking forward to listening to them on audible. I just wish The Lute Player by Z Oprah Lofts was on audible.
This series was recommended among their favourite books by one of my loved authors.(Unfortunately I do not at present remember either the author-apart from the fact it was a woman- or the venue in which the "Favourite Book List" appeared. It could have been The Week magazine or it might have been on Facebook's Good Read page. Either way I ordered the books and have enjoyed the first two and am now on my third.
Historical details of how people lived in the times of Mary Tudor, through Elizabeth and the Civil War, right up to the Restoration, are accurately given and explained through the eyes of ordinary people who come and go through the House. Everyone has a tale to tell and we learn the story of the house through the effect events have on various lives. Norah Lofts was one of my favourite authors when I was a teenager in the 60s. I am sure I must have read this trilogy then but I remembered almost nothing and I am enjoying it afresh with different eyes today.
