Eagle Eye’s sheltered existence in the gardens of the High King shatters the day he saves the Crown Prince from a dragon. Inside a week, all he wants is to keep the Prince safe from the monstrous High King Beagar, who hates his son with a passion that rivals Eagle’s young love.
Soon the High King’s designs send Eagle and his beautiful Prince sailing across the northern sea to a land of long summer days and endless winter nights, but they aren’t meant to make it there alive. If Eagle is going to keep his Prince safe, he’ll have to fight his way through assassins, sorcerers, and anything else Beagar’s power and influence can throw at him—all without magic of his own.
Eagle only wants his Prince’s heart, and he’ll burn the world to get it.

First and foremost, I want to be very clear that I have enjoyed every story I’ve read by author MA Ray.
Including this one. But, I had some difficulty with The High Kings Will. So we are going to talk about that.
MA Ray is an excellent author. The world of Rothnagar that she has created is truly amazing. She has a gift for writing, and it shows in what she writes. Characters and dialogue are rich. There is just enough description to wet the appetite of the reader without being too descriptive. Just the way I like it. But something about this story set me off wrong.
At first I thought I was one of those guys…the main characters are both male, and they fall in love. But I know me, and really, that doesn’t bother me. I know I’m not one of those guys. So what was wrong with it. Maybe it was the fact that there is a bit of kissing and more going on, which I have admitted in the past, that I’m a bit of a prude when it comes to that stuff in books. Not a big fan. But still, there isn’t that much of it, though I would not recommend this book for the younger audience.
So what was it? And then it hit me. The High King’s Will, to me, is really a romance novel hidden inside a fantasy novel. There is action, to be sure, but that action is spaced out too far for me. There was simply too much romance in it. Sure, a little romance is fine, but for me, this had too much. I think the level of romance really detracted from the action, as made one of the characters, Brother Fox, seem very weak. Maybe that leads into future storyline, and I hope it does, but I didn’t like it.
About ¾ of the through the story, the action picked up. And as quickly as that, I was drawn back in. It’s that way with all MA Ray’s stories, she draws you and so much, you can’t stop reading…even if it’s way to late and you really need to sleep.
All in all, romance withstanding, I still have to rate this story high. The story is necessary for the overall history/storyline she has created. I enjoyed reading it and cannot wait for her to finish the next in the series. I recommend it to anyone that loves fantasy and romance. Even if you’re a cold hearted bastard like me and can’t stand romance, you will still enjoy this story.

The High King Will Steel for the Prince Book 1 edition by MA Ray Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Eagle Eye’s father is High King Beager’s huntsman. His father has taught him a great many things about surviving at court, and most of those things involve staying away from it and knowing how to fight. He knows how to track animals for the royal table, how to care for hounds, and how to keep his mouth shut. Sure, he’s killed a dragon—but that was almost completely an accident. When the crown prince, beautiful Brother Fox, arrives in Eagle’s hut, wounded from the most recent of the king’s beatings, all father’s warnings go out the window. Fox wants to leave home, and he wants Eagle to go with him. Eagle thirsts for adventure, and he thirsts for Fox. How can he refuse?
Full disclosure this lady is one of my favorite writers. I grew out of epic fantasy years ago, but every time she puts out a book I squeal like a little kid and snatch that bad boy up. This book is a little bit of a departure for her. It’s romance as much as adventure, and though it happens in Rothganar, it’s six hundred years before Dingus’ time and almost unrecognizable as the same place. But what isn’t unrecognizable is the rich complexity of the characters, the beautiful tapestry of words, and the magical feeling imparted by the prose.
I love when a long-awaited new book by a favorite author is everything I hoped, and that means I loved this book. If you like epic fantasy with a little romance and a whole lot of action, pick this up. Tell ‘em I sent you.
You can always tell when you are reading something magical. Fox and Eagle are two characters that will stay with you long after you finish reading their story. (And lucky for you, this isn't just one book, but a series. That cliff hanger--ARGH) Anyway.

Fox and Eagle are very different Fox is high-born, while Eagle is but the son of the huntsman. Ah, but there's more to Eagle's father than meets the eye, and it's the same for his son.

At the opening of the book, Eagle has killed a dragon. It thrusts him into the spotlight, a place no one in their right mind would want to be in, because that means the evil eyes of Beagar are also upon him. The High King is Fox's father and he's cold, implacable, and as corrupt as the dragon Eagle killed. Does Beagar see Eagle as a threat? Perhaps, perhaps not. Not yet.

Fox and Eagle have an immediate attraction, a spark between them that in ordinary circumstances would never be allowed to flourish. They are two different classes, one rich, one poor. Luckily for them both, nothing remains ordinary around Eagle.

They set off on an adventure in the hopes of escaping the glaring eye of the High King and the vultures that call themselves the High Ones. Unfortunately, the will of the High King is great and his reach far.

The book is full of beautiful language and complex situations. You'll love it if you enjoy yaoi, I'm guessing. You'll love it if you enjoy reading fairy tales. You'll love it if you enjoy high fantasy.

If you can't handle adult situations, or language, or intense emotion, you should probably steer clear. For all the fairies and unicorns, this isn't a light-hearted story. It's a beautiful, glassy lake with creatures under the water, and dark things that can swallow you whole.
